RIO+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development

16/09/2016

12  - 22 Jun 2012

Civil society taking global responsibility
Models of civil society participation in sustainable development from local to global level.

Conference organised by the EESC on the sidelines of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20 side event).

Involving civil society at global, national and local levels is crucial for a successful transition to a green economy and sustainable societies. Therefore, appropriate systems for dialogue and democratic participation should be established at each level. The Rio+20 discussions on governance and the institutional framework for sustainable development must consider the participatory aspect. The conference will be an opportunity to discuss civil society participation based on experiences with models from global, regional, national and local level. Institutional approaches will be considered as well as consultation rights of citizens and access to information.

With interventions of EESC President Staffan Nilsson, EESC Member Brenda King, and Danish Minister for Development Cooperation Christian Friis Bach.
