Advisory report 2009/05 : Consumer rights in the internal market
The European Commission s proposed consumer rights directive will help simplify European rules and improve the functioning of the internal market. The Social and Economic Council's Committee for Consumer Affairs (CCA) agrees with much of the proposal, although it would like to see clarification of various points. Some aspects of the proposal fall short with respect to consumer protection, however, particularly when viewed from the vantage point of Dutch consumer legislation. These are the observations of the CCA in this advisory report.

OPINION 3/2009 on the Bill to modify Act 7/1996, of 15 January 1996, on the regulation of retail trade and other complementary regulations
In its report, the ESC feels that adequate treatment of the socio-economic situation of the retail trade sector and the effect that the application of this Bill would have on it are lacking. The report points out that the main objective of the text sent to the Council is to see if it complies with the transposition objective of the European Directive on Services.

Annual report with as a main topic sustainability. No topic is more appropriate for the Council s Annual Report for 2008 than the problem of sustainability. If 2009 turns out to be as difficult economically as all the forecasts would have us believe, then there is yet more reason to make promoting sustainability a leading principle when adopting the necessary measures. It will then be possible for the growth that will at some point resume in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe to be of benefit, more than ever, to people, planet, and profit.
