This conference is part of the EESC's efforts to bring the Europe 2020 flagship initiative on the "Digital Agenda for Europe" to a civil society audience in the Member States. The objective of the event is to focus attention at national level on the Digital Agenda and its importance for economic growth, job creation and social inclusion
The EESC is organizing a public hearing on collaborative or participative consumption on 25 September 2013 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The aim of this hearing is to gather stakeholders active in the field of collaborative or participative consumption and enable them to present their observations, concerns and expectations related to this phenomenon. Those contributions will feed the EESC's opinion on this topic which is currently under preparation.
The European Economic and Social Committee, the European Commission and the City of Strasbourg are launching a major European event on Social entrepreneurship.
This event will take place in Strasbourg, on January 16th and 17th 2014, in an interactive way. Its aim will be to widely disseminate information and knowledge of what has taken place so far and to inspire European participants to take further the initiatives and actions in which they are involved.

Important items on the agenda of this year's summit will be youth and employment in the Mediterranean region; managing water-related challenges; mobility and immigration, and the UfM's ties to civil society.

Addressed at communications experts and national and international media specialists, this year's EESC civil society media seminar focuses on effective ways of communicating the added value of the EU ahead of the 2014 European elections.
Topics include:
• branding and European image-building,
• communicating the cost of non-Europe,
• impact of new media on public communications,
• the 2014 European elections' communications challenges.
The seminar is organised in cooperation with the European Parliament and will be streamed live online.

Much more than a simple conference, this special Strasbourg event will be organised in an interactive way.
The EESC has appointed Luis PLANAS PUCHADES as Secretary-General. He takes up duty on 1 March 2014.
Mr Planas was minister for agriculture, fisheries and the environment in the regional government of Andalucía (Spain) until September 2013.
Mr Planas is a committed European whose previous work experience has given him a thorough insight into the EU decision-making process: before becoming Spain's permanent representative to the EU in 2010, he was head of the private office of the EU Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Pedro Solbes (1999-2004), and that of European Commission Vice-President Manuel Marín, whose remit covered the Mediterranean, Latin America and Asia (1996-1999). Prior to that, he served as a member of the European and Spanish parliaments.
Mr Planas holds a degree in law from the University of Valencia, Spain, and has published various works on the EU and on Spain's EU membership.

Even in times of crisis consumers have their rights. Those rights are legally binding and even a long-lasting crisis cannot be used as an excuse for the lack of enforcement.
