Launched in March 2010, the Europe 2020 Strategy picks up from where the Lisbon Strategy left off. Mandated by the European Council to help civil society take ownership of the project, the European Economic and Social Committee turned to the national ESCs and, therefore, to the French Economic, Social and Environmental Council (French CESE) for help with this project.
From April 2012, European citizens will enjoy a new right, which will give them a stronger voice in EU affairs when the European Citizens’ Initiative enters into force. From that moment on, they will be able to express their demands in a new, unprecedented way.

The European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) is one of the major innovations of the Treaty of Lisbon and will increase participatory democracy in the EU. The initiative enables one million EU citizens to call directly on the European Commission to propose a legal act in an area within the competences of the EU.

President Staffan Nilsson will have several meetings with the Council of Europe representatives, among others with the President of the Conference of INGOs (International Non-governmental Organisations of the Council of Europe), Mr Jean-Marie Heydt, in Strasbourg and will intervene in the conference organised by the Regional Economic and Social Council of Alsace "The AGORA of the Alsatian economy".
Vice-President Anna Maria Darmanin awarded the prizes for the EESC video challenge 2012 - Europe past forward. The winners, the jury members, EESC Members and staff members, as well as a few contacts from other EU institutions and media took part in the award ceremony.
